材料及答案
(Text 1)
M:Wow, there’s a great deal of work for us to do.
W:Oh, it isn’t so bad as it looks. After all, the greater part of it has already been done.
(Text 2)
W:Do you know Jane bought a new white evening dress?
M:A white evening dress? How do you like it?
W:Very much. In fact, I’ve got a blue one just like hers.
(Text 3)
M:Have you been here long?
W:Well, just five days; we arrived on the tenth.
M:Will you be staying for some time?
W:Yes, until the twentysecond.
(Text 4)
M:Hi, Sue. I called you last night, but there was no reply. Were you out?
W:Oh, I’m sorry, Jeff. I went to the cinema with my sister.
M:Did you have fun?
W:Yes. The movie was about a football star. We really enjoyed it.
(Text 5)
W:How long does it take you to travel to work?
M:Well, it’s 15 minutes’ walk from my house to the bus stop, and it’s about half an hour’s drive to my factory.
(Text 6)
W:Hello. I’m Mrs. Carter.
M:Oh! David’s mother! I’m pleased to meet you.
W:Nice to meet you, too. Please tell me, how is David doing in math this year?
M:He’s doing very well. He works very hard, and his grades are excellent. He’s already a top student in my class. You should be very proud of him.
W:I’m happy to hear that. Thank you. And by the way, could you tell me something about his other subjects?
(Text 7)
M:Hi, Kate. How are you getting on?
W:Hey, what are you doing here? I didn’t expect you until later.
M:Well, I’ve already finished everything I had to do at work, so I thought I’d come back and help you.I know you’ve had a busy day.
W:I’ve had a very busy day, and it isn’t finished yet. Did you remember we’ve got Paul and Hannah for dinner tonight?
M:Yes, I did. Have you got everything we need?
W:Well, I’ve already done the shopping, but I haven’t bought the wine yet.
M:Oh, I’ll do that. Have you picked up the children yet?
W:No, I haven’t done that yet. They are still at school.
M:OK, well, I’ll get them when I buy the wine.
W:No, they’re going to their sports club, so they’ll be there until about six.
M:Then I can help you in the kitchen before I buy the wine.
(Text 8)
W:Hi.
M:Hi! What’s up?
W:Nothing much. I’m just watching a debate on TV. It’s about no smoking in public places.
M:Oh, yeah. So, what do you think about it?
W:Well, I don’t think people should be allowed to smoke in public places, so I support the suggestion.
M:Really? I’m a smoker, so I should have the right to smoke whenever I want.
W:But don’t you think that nonsmokers have rights too?
M:Sure. You don’t have to smoke if you don’t want to. What’s the problem?
W:Well, I think that I should have the right not to breathe smoke.
M:So why cannot you just go outside if it bothers you?
W:I want to ask you the same question. Why cannot smokers just go outside if they want to smoke?
M:Well, smoking is part of my lifestyle. I can think better if I have a cigarette.
W:I can breathe better if I don’t have to breathe smoke. Smoking is bad for your health. Doctors say that just breathing in other people’s smoke can also cause cancer.
M:Well, I’m a smoker, and my health is good.
W:Yes. But will it be good in fifteen years?
M:I hope so.
W:I hope so, too. I think we’ll just have to agree to disagree about this subject. Do you want to watch the debate with me?
M:Sure.
(Text 9)
W:Hello, Mr. Tompkins. Our newspaper will carry some information about new products. Now, will you tell us about the new home your company has built? It promises to be a model for the houses of the future.
M:Certainly. The idea is not to have a house full of different things. This is a complete home system. It will make people’s lives easier.
W:OK. So tell me how this house will make my life easier.
M:When you arrive at the front door, you won’t need a key. The door will open with a touch of your finger. You will be able to call your refrigerator when you’re in the supermarket and find how much you need to buy. Isn’t it wonderful?
W:Can I call the washing machine as well?
M:Sure. But you won’t need to. The house comes with a robot. It is programmed to do cleaning and washing.
W:And what’s the price of the new house?
M:A million dollars.
W:A million dollars! It will be the 22nd century before I can afford to buy one!
(Text 10)
After a rather difficult case, the detective and his good friend decided to take a camping trip. Once having a fine meal and a bottle of wine they decided to go to sleep.A few hours before daybreak, the detective woke up his friend and said, “Bobby, look up and tell me what you see.”Bobby did so and said, “Why, I see millions of stars.”
The detective said, “What does this suggest to you,my good friend?”Bobby thought for a moment and said, “I can think of many things...From a scientific standpoint, the millions of stars visible suggest there are millions of planets moving around those stars.”
“Go on,” said the detective.Bobby thought for a moment more and continued,“From a religious standpoint, I can see God’s work is wonderful and we are but a small part of this plan. From a weather reporter’s standpoint, from a clear sky, I think that tomorrow will be quite sunny. So tell me, my friend, what do you think about this wonderful sight?”The detective replied. “Bobby, how foolish you are! Someone has stolen our tent!”
